Big Brothers Big Sisters has several fantastic volunteer opportunities in the next 2 months. There are over 100 boys in the BB/BS Amachi program (for youth who have a parent who is incarcerated) who are waiting for a Big Brother. On Monday, June 6th, 4 Metro Milwaukee Nights Kiwanians took to the phones for Milwaukee Public television. As part of their annual membership and fund-raising drive, Channels 10/36 were showing a Dr Wayne Dyer program called “The Power of Intention.” During breaks in the program, a taped interview with Dr Dyer was played and the phone lines were open for any loyal viewers who wanted to sign up for membership in the Friends of 10/36.

Anne, Darren, Deborah and Paul were all on hand to answer phones with a smile (and enjoy the donated Kopps ice cream during breaks). In total, the four of us totaled $6,480 in donations for public TV. Anne left early holding a big lead with $1,270. However, the late surge of phone calls during the final stages of the program enabled the rest of us to catch up.

The final tally (even though it wasn’t a competition):

  1. Deborah - $2,655
  2. Darren - $1,345
  3. Anne - $1,270
  4. Paul - $1,210

There were also a number of “entertaining” hang-ups, prank calls, people just trying to be annoying and one person who called because she recognized one of us on TV.

Stay tuned later this summer for another chance to help out Channels 10/36.

Over the weekend of February 26-27, 2005, several of our club members volunteered at the U.S. National Short Track Speedskating Championships, held at the Petit Center in Milwaukee.

On Saturday, four of our club members even donned mascot uniforms and mingled with children participating in a free skate on the ice oval surrounding the competition. This article contains the pictures of our mascoted members.
